February 25th, 2025: Ellen, Gerard, and Carmen are currently staying in The Gambia on behalf of Pure Foundation. Yesterday, they cooperated in the clinic, and today was all about training and optimizing stock management.
Once again, we see how much use is made of the leftover items from maternity packages. The need for pads and mattress protectors is enormous. Do you have any left over? If so, please bring them to @puurvroedvrouwen so we can put them where they are needed most.
Inventory management needs attention, especially now that other parts of the hospital are being remodeled. Our team is helping to reorganize storage and improve logistics processes.
The training given to healthcare staff today was valuable.
We’ve noticed that staff turnover remains a challenge; some of the staff trained last year are now working in other hospitals. We are exploring ways to transfer knowledge more sustainably—such as re-organizing a whiteboard with essential information for physicians and caregivers, and engaging with staff about how to delegate responsibilities effectively.
Unfortunately, it has once again become clear how urgently a NICU is needed. Today, a newborn who required extra care had to be transported to another hospital two hours away. The mother couldn’t come along and is now separated from her baby. 💔 This is exactly why we remain committed to establishing a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Bwiam.

Tomorrow, the team will visit another clinic in the country that is cooperating with the hospital in Bwiam. You’ll read another update tomorrow evening!
